COHEN, David
(1882–1967)
   Professor of ancient history at the Uni versityof Amsterdam. Cohen played a crucial role during the 1930s in the committee for the promotion of the interests of the Jews, es pecially of the Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany, and during the German occupation of the Netherlands (1940–1945) in the Jewish Council. In particular, his role in this latter council, which was made to heed the Germans, was bitterly criticized after the war. Cohen wrote on Greek papyrology, on the notariat in ancient Egypt, and on the Jewish refugees in the Netherlands.
